Throwing a story behind it I'd say one of mario's enemies disguised himself as the Princess and set a trap. Thinking he had eliminated the plumber down a drain he was rather upset when he reappeared smeillng like a rose (well at least the roses he handed the false female did)
I had a different idea in mind but yours is pretty cool
Plus a male in a princess disguise like that would be funny as he suffers being stuck in it longer and longer as Mario keeps escaping traps he set.
